Cooking offers an excellent opportunity to bring people together, encourage teamwork, and build stronger relationships. That’s exactly what happened when Rainbow Chefs Academy facilitated an interactive team building exercise at the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators (HAABSE) strategic alignment meeting. After a productive day of planning, HAABSE’s leaders applied their culinary skills in a friendly tostada preparation competition. Here’s a look at the delicious outcomes:

Svetlana Elgart, Founder and CEO of Rainbow Chefs Academy, and Larry Johnson, Director of Partnerships, were on-site to ensure the activity’s success. Chef Barbara Vasser-Baldwin and two aspiring student-chefs from the Houston area were also key contributors. A special thank-you goes out to Craig Howard, a local entrepreneur and Texas Restaurant Association board member, who donated the meeting space.
Advancing Education for All Students
Founded in 1986, the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators aims to advance excellence for all students with a special focus on black students. HAABSE is an affiliate of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE), the state-level chapter of the National Alliance of Black Student Educators (NABSE). Founded in 1970, NABSE is today an international organization, and the United State’s premier advocate for all students and educators.
NABSE’s newly seated president, Dr. Kimberly McLeod was present and gave a talk that was especially inspiring for all attendees—including our team at Rainbow Chefs Academy.
“These are some of the most forward-thinking, dedicated educators that I’ve ever met, and I’ve been around education my entire life,” says Larry Johnson, Director of Partnerships at Rainbow Chefs Academy. “It was an honor for Rainbow Chefs Academy to support HAABSE’s strategic alignment meeting, which brought together leaders from across local, state, and even national levels.”
Rallying the Team, One Recipe at a Time
Feedback about the cooking-based team building event was overwhelmingly positive. In fact, HAABSE’s recap post on LinkedIn received dozens of favorable reactions, including a glowing review from HAABSE Advisory Board member, Dr. Reagan Flowers. HAABSE’s President, Dr. Brenda Dearmon, also expressed accolades for Rainbow Chefs Academy:
“Thank you again for helping to organize an amazing event. I am still receiving calls and text messages stating that this was the best team meeting ever. Your support is the reason for the next level success.”
