Culinary Curriculum
A curriculum includes the lessons, content, activities, and overall student experience that make up an educational course. A culinary curriculum applies those same elements to a cooking-focused course, combining food preparation, nutrition education, hands-on activities, and guided learning experiences.
Curriculum Diversity
Culinary curriculums vary depending on a variety of factors, such as the intended audience, delivery format, classroom setting, and desired learning outcome. For example, one might expect considerable differences when comparing culinary curriculums offered by:
Culinary Schools: Most states in the U.S. offer multiple options for aspiring chefs who seek specialized culinary training. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), for example, offers a detailed comparison of culinary schools available in The Lone Star State.
Universities and Colleges: Certain colleges and universities, such as The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of New Hampshire offer culinary-focused areas of study.
K-12 Schools: According to the National Center for Education Statistics, most public schools incorporate nutrition education somewhere within their standard curriculums. However, some states like Texas are implementing additional nutrition education requirements, which is transforming curriculum decision-making.
Homeschool Programs: The percentage of students who are homeschooled in the United States increased from 1.7% in 1999 to 2.8% in 2019, according to a fact sheet from the National Center for Education Statistics. At-home learning can be conducive for culinary instruction, especially in homes that include a full or partial kitchen.
Community and Private Organizations: Incorporating a culinary component into publicly accessible programs provides constituents with a fun, engaging way to build life skills. Likewise, certain private organizations—like camps and youth organizations—include food-based learning as part of their educational mix.
Educational Companies: Companies like Rainbow Chefs Academy develop and, in some cases, administer educational programs that encourage healthy food choices. School districts, youth organizations, and other institutions partner with such providers to enable high-impact culinary experiences.
