Family involvement is critical for ensuring healthy childhood development.
Parents who encourage learning—both inside and outside of the classroom—set their children up for success. Educators and lawmakers recognize this reality, as practically all states have adopted legislation to encourage parental involvement in education. California’s Education Code Section 11503, for example, requires a “written parent and family engagement program” for each school in a district requiring federal funds under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Among other requirements, such programs must provide:
“Home activities, strategies, and materials that can be used to assist and enhance the learning of children both at home and at school.”
—California Education Code, Section 11503
Section 52060 of California Education Code describes local control and accountability plan (LCAP) requirements and explicitly lists parental involvement and family engagement as a priority. The code mentions that family engagement may include “…treating families as partners to inform, influence, and create practices and programs that support pupil success…”
At Rainbow Chefs Academy, we like the idea of partnering with families for the betterment of students. Here are some ways that our service supports school-to-home learning.
Teaching Healthy Habits through Hands-On Culinary Experiences
Rainbow Chefs Academy partners with school districts and youth organizations to encourage health, wellness, and nutrition. Students learn how to prepare delicious (and healthy) recipes while exploring math, science, social studies, and other subjects. Our standards-aligned courses are a natural fit for before-school and after-school programming but can also be incorporated into school-day activities.
Our mission doesn’t stop when the 3 o’clock bell rings, however. Empowering a healthier future and improving the wellness of society requires creativity, which is a big reason for Rainbow Chefs Academy backpacks. Students who receive a Rainbow Chefs Academy backpack are equipped with essential tools for putting their culinary knowledge and skills into action—at home.

Our backpacks were designed with sustainability in mind and include safe, high-quality utensils for student recipe preparation. Contents of the backpack include:
- Bamboo cutting board
- Child-safe knife
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cups
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Mixing spoon
- Drink shaker bottle
- Bristled scrubber
- Apron
In addition, our Family Table resource library provides on-demand access to recipes and other helpful resources. Parents can access Family Table for free to browse a variety of activities that can be done alongside their children.
The backpacks are a win-win—school districts empower students with tools for at-home learning and parents enjoy an easy (and fun) way to participate in the education of their children.
